CHAPTER THIRTEEN

For being an addict and only having a few days, Curtis had done a fine job of preparing the old hotel for Leo’s arrival. The crumbling exterior was hidden behind scaffolding and tarps. The interior had been cleared of the homeless and as much trash as possible. Ownership was ambiguous, but Leo was confident once he set himself up inside the old building, no one would challenge his claim.

Walking around the large lobby, fresh from the interviews Curtis had arranged for him, Leo couldn’t help but be impressed. He had spent the last 24 hours talking to locals who remembered what the hotel was like in years past. Many had old photos and glowing memories of the place. Those were what Leo needed if he were to restore it to its former glory.

He looked up from where he was examining a large pillar near the center of the lobby. Leo was expecting Curtis, but instead one of the men who’d come with him from the farm was striding across the room, looking concerned.

“What is it, Steven?” Leo moved to meet him. “You look distressed.”

“Your crate arrived,” Steve replied, looking at the floor, the wall, anywhere but Leo’s face.

“That’s fabulous news. Can you move it to my room?” Leo smiled.

“I can manage, but, well,” Steve drew a deep breath. “Your friend… He did not survive the trip.”

“Oh.” Leo’s pleasant face fell and he shook his head sadly. “That is most unfortunate. Where is he now?”

“In the truck where I found him. Jim’s guarding it, keeping the workers away.”

“Don’t worry, Steven. I know what to do.” Leo reached out and touched Steve’s face, traces of his power reaching out to soothe the man’s nerves. “Once the crate is in my room, you and Jim should take the truck back to the farm. There you can give our friend the quiet resting place he deserves after all his hard work for the cause.”

Steve nodded and walked away. Leo sighed. The dead man was once the top Hero in New England, a title that meant next to nothing in the global market. His name was Carl, though his Hero name escaped Leo’s mind most days. It was as forgettable as the man himself. No one would even notice that he was gone. But Leo had had a purpose for him. A purpose that was going to go unfulfilled unless he found an alternative and quickly.

Turning in a circle, looking around the hotel lobby, he sighed yet again. This project might have to wait a bit. He could not do what needed done without a vessel.

“Hey, Boss-man.” Curtis came into the space with a wave and no concept of Leo’s personal space as he draped an arm over his shoulders. The former darling of the Villain circuit was looking and feeling better than he had in years. The one drop high was incredible, but also allowed him to have a full eight hours sleep without all the twitching and drug induced nightmares.

“I’ve been working on something for you.
